Gastroscopy (OGD) in Singapore: Specialist Upper GI Evaluation

Accurate Diagnosis & Early Detection for Stomach, Acid Reflux & Digestive Symptoms

A Gastroscopy — also known as an OGD (Oesophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy) —is a quick, routine day-surgery procedure that provides direct visualization of your upper digestive system. Performed using a ultra-thin, flexible camera tube, it allows our surgeons to inspect, biopsy, and treat mucosal abnormalities in a single session.

When should you get a gastroscopy?

You should consider an upper endoscopy if you experience persistent upper digestive symptoms, or as part of cancer screening.

1. Investigating Warning Symptoms

Persistent Upper Abdominal Pain or Bloating:

Frequent indigestion that doesn’t resolve with antacids.

Chronic Acid Reflux / GERD:

Long-standing heartburn, regurgitation, or chest discomfort.

Difficulty or Painful Swallowing:

Feeling like food gets stuck in your chest.

Unexplained Weight Loss

or Loss of Appetite

Signs of GI Bleeding:

Vomiting blood, dark/tarry stools, or unexplained iron-deficiency anemia.

2. Early Stomach Cancer Screening

Stomach (gastric) cancer is among the top cancers in Singapore and often remains silent in its early stages. A gastroscopy is the gold standard for detecting pre-cancerous lesions, H. pylori bacterial infections, and stomach ulcers before they progress.

Combined Screening: Many patients choose a Double Scope (Gastroscopy + Colonoscopy) in a single session to thoroughly evaluate both the upper and lower GI tracts under one period of sedation.

What Happens During the Procedure?

A gastroscopy is safe, painless, and completed within 10 to 15 minutes.

What to Expect

Fasting for 6 to 8 hours beforehand (clear water permitted up to 2 hours prior).

A local anesthetic spray numbs your throat, and mild IV sedation is administered so you remain asleep and completely comfortable throughout.

The thin scope is guided through the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Biopsies or polyp removals are performed seamlessly if required.
